Position:  8th Grade Language Arts

Education: Masters degree in education

Bio: I  have taught eighth grade language arts at Powell Middle School since 2002. Before I came to Powell, I taught English at Triumph High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming for two years and one year of ninth grade English at the high school in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. My wife (who teaches 8th grade language arts and facilitates the International Baccalaureate program at Newton Middle School) and I were married in July of 2000, and our son Cormac was born in January of 2006, just before I finished my Masters degree in education. While teaching English is one of my passions, I also enjoy most sports and outdoor activities, especially skiing and soccer. My favorite mountain is Vail, and the club team I support is Arsenal, one of the great football clubs in the English Premier League.

In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am also the Language Arts Department Chairperson, Intramural Director, and 8th Grade Head Volleyball Coach for Powell Middle School. I am glad to have the chance to be a leader in this fine school. I also like getting to know our students outside of the classroom, and athletics provides me this avenue. Our excellent coaching staff knows how to get the best out of our athletes, and I feel lucky to be a part of our program.

Contact Information: I am busy with athletics most days after school, so the best time for meetings with me is before school, and the best time for student help sessions is Tuesdays during lunch. However, I may also be available at other times by appointment. You can also reach me by email: blacey@lps.k12.co.us.

 Science

Mr. Andrew Genson

Position: 7th and 8th Grade Science

Education:  Penn State, Biology with minors in Marine Science and Business

Bio: I have been living in Colorado for nine years (with a year long detour through Chicago, Illinois) and have been teaching for seven of those years. After being born in Concord, California, my parents immediately moved me to Dalton, Georgia. Yes, that is the carpet capital of the world for those of you that know your trivia or have been there before. After four years (that I remember oh so well) we moved to Midland, Michigan. Midland is recognized for its connections to the Dow Corporation. My father worked for Dow for nearly 30 years before being let go during my senior year. With this change I knew it was only a matter of time before it impacted me. He immediately got hired by one of the greatest universities in the world, PENN STATE. For any nittany lion fans or alumni; We Are …. With the tuition break that came with being a son of an employee I knew I had to at least check out Happy Valley. I immediately fell in love with it and spent five years at school accumulating a degree in Biology with minors in Marine Science and Business. I understood my calling was education during these five years, but I felt I would be able to get a well rounded education by focusing on the sciences rather than education. After graduation I move out to Denver and set up shop. I spent a year working in an environmental lab gaining the status of a resident. With this status I went back to school full time while working a full time job. A year and a half flew by and next thing I know student teaching is staring me in the face. Student teaching was a crazy six months, but did I learn a lot and in the process my relationship with my then girlfriend (now wife) grew exponentially. After all of that I have been married for just over five years and we now have a little one at home, our puppy dog. She is a crazy 4 year old (who acts like a 6 month old) with lab, husky and some type of Australian dog in her. I say Australian because she looks almost exactly like a dingo. Her name is Nesta after a famous musician’s middle name (my wife is a huge reggae fan) and she will be the only little one running around our household for at least a few more years.

Position: 8th Grade Science

Education:  I went to college in Reno, Nevada and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1997. I then moved to San Diego, California, became addicted to surfing, and worked towards a Master’s degree in Teaching, which I finished in 2004.

Bio: I am 35 years old as of September 10th and am married to an amazing, beautiful woman named Jenn. She deserves consideration
sainthood for putting up with me! We have a crazy dog named Ottawa who will play fetch until he collapses. We don’t have any children of our own yet, but are pursuing adoption, so wish us luck!

I was born in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up in Carson City, Nevada. I spent most of my childhood fishing, riding motorcycles, playing football and wrestling. I went to college in Reno, Nevada and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1997. I then moved to San Diego, California, became addicted to surfing, and worked towards a Master’s degree in Teaching, which I finished in 2004. Jenn and I got married while living in San Diego, and then moved out here to Denver in 2001.

For hobbies, I really love to exercise, adventure, and learn. I am an avid runner and weight lifter. I also ride my mountain bike as much as possible. My absolute favorite sport is snowboarding and I will likely make you do snow dances in the winter. There is nothing quite so perfect as a steep line of untracked powder through the trees. I really, really like to learn as well, and honestly spend lots of my free time reading and teaching myself science and history. I also enjoy listening to and playing music, playing video games, hiking, camping, fishing, fantasy football, and playing video games. Yes, I said video games twice.

This will be my ninth year teaching in LPS. I taught fifth grade at Mark Twain Elementary for three years, then moved here to Powell where I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science. So I have a really good sense of what content you learned in the past as well as what you will learn in the future!

Position:  8th Grade U. S. History; 7th Grade World History

Bio:  As a 4th generation Colorado native I have “the mountains” in my blood; in 1986 I moved to 8800 feet in beautiful Conifer.  Daily I see all kinds of wildlife, and then I travel down the canyon and enjoy the wildlife here at Powell Middle School where I teach Social Studies.  After 32 years, I still love teaching.  I received my undergrad at CU, my masters at DU, and a global education through various travels.  Some travel highlights include a trek to Nepal and the Everest Base Camp region and a climb on Kilimanjaro.
I am most grateful for my hubby and best friend Michael; we have been happily married since 1990.   Our dog Pumbaa, an Oripei with five different kinds of snorts, brings lots of laughter to our home.  I love spending time with family and friends.  I also enjoy travel, skiing, hiking, eating, talking, shopping, reading, going to movies/theater, and sleeping in on Saturday mornings.

Theme for Teaching History:
History is the story of the choices our ancestors have made and the subsequent consequences of those choices.  My approach is to help students discover the stories behind the events/people in order to bring history to life.   I subscribe to the quote that “history is gossip that is good for us”.

Contact Information:  I believe my relationship with parents and students is a partnership.  Please feel free to give me your input and contact me whenever you have questions or concerns.  The best method is via email: dvonvihl@lps.k12.co.us  Voice Mail:  303-734-6362
